Congress takes umbrage at TRS remarks

HYDERABAD, JAN. 19. The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has accused the Telangana Rashtra Samiti of embarrassing the Government by issuing provocative statements in wake of the breakdown of peace talks after three encounters in the last few days.

The APCC spokespersons -- Kodanda Reddy and Md. Jani -- at a press conference here on Wednesday advised its alliance partner to observe restraint instead of creating a piquant situation for the Government. They denied the TRS charge that Government was responsible for breakdown of peace talks.

Mr. Reddy said there was no truth in the charge that Government had scuttled the peace talks fearing that the Telangana issue would dominate the meeting. "The TRS had been embarrassing the Government with its intemperate remarks," they charged.

They called upon the TRS leaders to stop issuing statements, which would lead to unpleasant situation.

"When you are an alliance partner, it is your duty to ensure that the Government does not face an embarrassing situation," they pointed out.

The Congress had taken serious note of the remarks and cautioned them to behave as a responsible coalition partner, the leaders said.

They reiterated the Government's commitment to continuing the peace talks. They told the TRS leaders to discuss issues, which might benefit them at party meetings instead of trying to drag the Government into it.

Mr. Jani also denied the TDP charge that Government was denying the Krishna delta farmers its due share of water from Srisailam and Nagarajunasagar projects.
